Why Arthroscopy?

How Arthroscopic Surgery Works

Arthroscopic surgery is performed under regional or general anaesthesia. Your surgeon makes two to four small incisions around the joint. A pencil-thin arthroscope with a high-definition camera is inserted through one, and specialised instruments through the others. The joint interior is projected onto a monitor in real time, allowing your surgeon to diagnose the exact problem and treat it repair the meniscus, reconstruct a torn ligament, fix a rotator cuff tear or clear loose bodies all through those small openings.

Arthroscopy can be performed under general anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia (spinal or nerve block), depending on the joint being operated on and your medical condition. Your anaesthetist will discuss the best option for you before surgery.
Recovery depends on what was done inside the knee. A simple meniscus trimming allows return to office work in 1–2 weeks and to sport in 4–6 weeks. Meniscus repair takes longer (return to sport around 3–4 months). ACL reconstruction typically needs 6–9 months of structured rehabilitation before return to full sport.
Many arthroscopic procedures are performed as day-care surgery  you come in the morning, have the procedure and go home the same day. More complex arthroscopic procedures like ACL reconstruction or rotator cuff repair may involve an overnight stay.
Arthroscopy allows direct visual inspection of the joint interior, which can occasionally identify subtle chondral (cartilage) damage, small loose bodies or synovial inflammation that MRI does not clearly show. It is both a diagnostic and treatment tool.
