How long does a fracture take to heal?

Most simple upper-limb fractures heal in 4–6 weeks; lower-limb fractures generally take 8–12 weeks. Complex or displaced fractures may take longer. Bone healing time depends on the fracture pattern, your age, general health and how closely you follow post-operative and rehabilitation instructions.

Do all fractures need surgery?

No. Stable, undisplaced fractures often heal well with casting and follow-up alone. Surgery is offered for displaced, unstable or complex fractures, where reliable healing needs precise realignment and internal fixation.

Is hip fracture surgery in elderly patients safe?

Modern hip fracture surgery is safe and, in fact, generally recommended for elderly patients early surgery reduces the complications of prolonged bed rest and gives the best chance of returning to walking. Pre-operative medical optimisation and coordinated post-operative care are key.
