Knee Replacement & Microplasty in Ahmedabad

Microplasty also known as Oxford Partial Knee Replacement or Unicondylar Knee Replacement (UKR) is a bone-preserving surgery that resurfaces only the damaged compartment of the knee, leaving the healthy parts and ligaments untouched. Combined with assisted alignment, it offers early-to-moderate arthritis patients a smaller incision, faster recovery and a more natural-feeling knee than a total knee replacement. At Mitra Hospital in Ahmedabad, our Microplasty and joint replacement surgeons perform both procedures for the right candidates.

What Is Microplasty Surgery?

Microplasty is the trademark name for the surgical technique used to implant the Oxford Partial Knee Replacement a widely-used unicondylar (single-compartment) knee replacement designed to treat medial (inner-side) knee arthritis. Instead of removing and resurfacing all three knee compartments as in a total knee replacement, Microplasty replaces only the worn compartment through a smaller, muscle-sparing incision.

Because the healthy bone, cartilage and both cruciate ligaments (ACL and PCL) are preserved, patients typically report a knee that feels more like their own with better range of motion, faster rehabilitation and shorter hospital stay compared with a total knee replacement.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate?

Microplasty vs Total Knee Replacement

Microplasty (Partial / UKR)

Smaller incision · Only the worn compartment is replaced · ACL and PCL preserved · More natural knee feel · Typically faster recovery · Shorter hospital stay · Best for single-compartment arthritis.

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

Larger incision · All three compartments resurfaced · Cruciate ligaments may be sacrificed · Reliable pain relief for advanced arthritis · Longer rehabilitation · Best for tri-compartmental or severe arthritis.

Recovery After Microplasty & Knee Replacement

Most Microplasty patients walk with support within a few hours of surgery, and many are discharged within 2–3 days. Structured physiotherapy begins the day after surgery and continues for 4–6 weeks. Most people return to office work in 3–4 weeks and to daily walking, gentle sport and travel by 8–12 weeks. Full recovery timelines vary based on your fitness, age and how closely you follow your rehabilitation plan.

Yes. Microplasty is the surgical technique used to implant the Oxford Unicondylar (Partial) Knee Replacement commonly abbreviated as UKR. When you hear "Microplasty surgery", "Oxford Partial Knee Replacement" or "UKR", they refer to the same category of bone-preserving, single-compartment knee replacement.

Ideal Microplasty candidates have arthritis confined to one compartment of the knee (typically the inner side), intact cruciate ligaments and a mild, correctable deformity. Suitability is confirmed after clinical examination and weight-bearing X-rays. Not every knee arthritis patient is a candidate some do better with total knee replacement.
Knee replacement typically takes 60–90 minutes for a single knee, similar to conventional knee replacement. The extra planning happens before surgery using imaging, so the operating time is not significantly longer.
